Artists to Celebrate the Industrial Heritage of Ferbane at Sculpture in the Parklands

Sculpture in the Parklands will host it’s annual artist in residence programme starting on September 4th. Artists Caroline Madden (USA) and David Kinane (Ireland) will work on site for three weeks creating artwork inspired by the rich industrial heritage of the peatlands.

Caroline and Dave will be working on site from September 4th to September 22nd. Public are welcome to visit the Parklands during the residency. Official launch of artwork on September 22nd.

Both artists have proposed large-scale sculptures inspired by our lost industrial icons in the landscape- the Ferbane Cooling Towers. Although the artists live over 4,000 miles from each other, Caroline and David arrived on site with proposals that celebrate this important part of our rich industrial heritage. Kevin O’Dwyer, director of the sculpture park project, said  ‘I’m delighted that we will finally have a fitting memorial to this important part of our industrial heritage that has been sadly lost since their destruction over 5 years ago.’

Caroline Madden, Professor of Sculpture at the University of Florida, is well known internationally for her cast glass sculptures. She recently completed a 30 foot stainless steel and glass sculpture at the Performing Arts Centre in Jacksonville, Florida. Her proposed sculpture at Lough Boora will reach a height of 22 foot and incorporate railway track, stone and glass.

David Kinane, based at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre, has worked as a sculptor for over 25 years. His bronze cast pieces are well known both in Ireland and internationally. David’s proposal will span a height of over 26 feet with a diameter of  over 20 feet.

Seamus Barron and Liam Fox of Bord na Mona have been working with the artists on the engineering, design and fabrication of these massive structures. Kevin O’Dwyer said ‘ without the expertise and enthusiasm of the lads in Bord na Mona we would not be able to create the large scale sculptures in the Parklands. The public are welcome to visit and watch the progress over the three weeks. We hope everyone will support the project by visiting the parklands during the residency programme. Please visit our website at www.sculptureintheparklands.com for further information.’

Bord na Mona, Offaly County Council and the Arts Council have generously supported the artists in residency programme at Lough Boora.
